Site Description
Grand Rapids is a growing and vibrant city. The downtown area is exploding with activity and you will be in the middle of it all. West Michigan is on the cutting edge of art, cuisine, and culture, but we also maintain a distinctive small-town feel as people are friendly and the streets are generally safe and clean. While Grand Rapids is a wonderful place to live and visit, it is not wonderful for everyone who lives here. Nearly 20% of the population still lives below the poverty line. During your stay in Grand Rapids, you will have a chance to learn from and work alongside people in our community. We expect that God is going to move in mighty ways this week, both in the hearts of individuals and in meeting the needs of the community. Come be a part of the change!
SERVE Projects
You will be working at a different site each day giving you a great experience in our city of contrasts. Some examples of work sites are:
- Partnering with agencies such as Habitat for Humanity, ICCF, and VIS that work with the homeless population
- Supporting & working in local missions and food banks
- Working with children’s and youth ministry organizations
- Yard work or light construction in homes
- Working side by side with homeowners who are on the brink of losing their prized possession
- Servant Evangelism
- You will also share, in some creative ways, Christ’s love in the community at large
In Church Partnership With:
LaGrave CRC
Facilities
LaGrave Christian Reformed Church will be the host. The church is air-conditioned and we have a great youth building for our evening sessions and plenty of room to hang out after the sessions. The church has a gym to use during free time and milkshakes are sold Monday-Thursday evenings.
Day Away
You will have the opportunity to go tubing down the Muskegon River. We will spend a few hours floating lazily down the river.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are not allowed during the SERVE week at this site for students. Cell phones may be used during the travel from your church to the SERVE site, but then are not allowed to be used during the SERVE week. Adult leaders will have their cell phones during the week.
Transportation
Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each church group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) for the entire mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans, SUVs, or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call the ThereforeGo Ministries office to discuss options and additional potential charges.
Nearest Airport
Grand Rapids, MI (GRR). Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received email confirmation from ThereforeGo Ministries that you have been placed at this site.
