Site Description
As the largest city in South Dakota, Sioux Falls offers a welcoming atmosphere and big city entertainment with a small-town feel. Some prominent features of the city of Sioux Falls are its beautiful parks and bike trails. Sioux Falls maintains more than 70 parks and greenways spread throughout the city as well as 16 miles of paved path for biking, walking, jogging, and running. Sioux Falls has also spent a lot of energy revitalizing its downtown area which is home to many great shops and restaurants as well as a beautiful sculpture walk and riverfront areas.
SERVE Projects
SERVE participants will be working with various ministry organizations in Sioux Falls that minister to the needs of the immigrant, native, and refugee families of our community. Our work sites will include: painting, landscaping, food prep and delivery, wheelchair repair, packing backpacks for young children, and other various projects.
In Church Partnership With:
First CRC
Facilities
Participants will be staying at First Christian Reformed Church and sleeping in air conditioned classrooms. There is a large gym onsite as well as showers both at First CRC and a nearby school.
Day Away
For our day away participants will travel to Lake Okoboji. The main attractions of the Okonoji area are the glacier-carved lakes. This beautiful chain of lakes extends from the Minnesota border southwest several miles and covers approximately 15,000 acres. Spring-fed West Lake Okoboji is a beautiful shade of blue and 134 feet deep. The depth of the lake makes it a popular regional destination for motor boating, water skiing, sailing, and swimming. It is the centerpiece of the five chain lakes, and while we are there we will enjoy a beautiful day relaxing, swimming, and boating.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are not allowed during the SERVE week at this site for students. Cell phones may be used during the travel from your church to the SERVE site, but then are not allowed to be used during the SERVE week. Adult leaders will have their cell phones during the week.
Additional Information
Sioux Falls is extremely hot and humid during July! We recommend bringing your biggest water bottle and being prepared to fill it often. Sunscreen is important too, but we will have some on site for you if you forget. Please come to this site with one semi-formal outfit for just one of our evening activities.
Sioux Falls SERVE is a gluten safe environment. Alongside our traditional menu, if you have celiac disease we will accommodate your needs of a gluten free diet and our kitchen staff works hard to avoid cross contamination
Transportation
Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each church group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) for the entire mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans, SUVs, or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call the ThereforeGo Ministries office to discuss options and additional potential charges.
Nearest Airport
