Let's Go!

Located in south-central Iowa, Pella is a charming community known for its rich Dutch heritage, beautiful downtown architecture, and welcoming small-town atmosphere. Founded by Dutch immigrants in1847, Pella has preserved much of its European character while also growing into a vibrant modern community. Pella has many parks, outdoor recreational opportunities, and locally owned shops and restaurants. Iowa’s largest lake, Lake Red Rock, is located just outside of town and provides opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. SERVE participants can expect to work alongside the many individuals, churches, and Christian non-profit organizations of Pella and our neighboring communities which seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus in south-central Iowa.

We will partner with the local ministries of Pella and beyond including food pantries, thrift stores, inner-city Christian schools of Des Moines, and local Christian summer camps. We will serve community members through different indoor and outdoor work projects including yard work, panting, and light construction.

Calvary CRC will be the host site. The church is air-conditioned throughout with spacious classrooms for separate sleeping quarters for guys and girls. The main building includes our worship space, church offices, fellowship hall, kitchen, and classrooms. Calvary’s Youth House includes an additional meeting space and game room. Our outdoor spaces include a basketball hoop and space for 9-square! Showers will be off-site.

Adventureland Amusement and Water Park in Altoona, IA

We hope to have several opportunities for water activities, so participants should pack swimsuits and beach towels.

Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each church group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) for the entire mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call the ThereforeGo Ministries office to discuss options and additional charges.

Des Moines International Airport (DSM). Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received email confirmation from ThereforeGo Ministries that you have been placed at this site.

Cell phones are not allowed during the SERVE week at this site for students.  Cell phones may be used during the travel from your church to the SERVE site, but then are not allowed to be used during the SERVE week.  Adult leaders will have their cell phones during the week.
