Site Description
Established in 1934, Crown Point is a city with a quaint hometown atmosphere and plenty of fascinating history. Situated in the center of what locals call “the Square” you will find the original Lake County Courthouse and clock tower named “The Grand Old Lady”. This historic town has inviting antique malls, restaurants, specialty stores, and coffee shops. Crown Point citizens are friendly and love hearing about the work that SERVE participants do in the community through our church.
Although Crown Point is a growing and thriving community you don’t have to go far to see a very different story. Many communities in Northwest Indiana and South Chicago struggle with unemployment, gangs, drugs, poor family structure, and the financial, social, and emotional difficulties that come with it. It’s here that we have made it a priority to nurture each other in the faith with the help of the Holy Spirit and demonstrate God’s love using words and acts of kindness as we attempt to be sensitive to the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs around us.
You will stay at First Christian Reformed Church. The surrounding area is safe. You will sleep in air conditioned classrooms with carpeted floors, but make sure to bring a sleeping pad or air mattress as the ground isn’t soft to sleep on. Breakfast and dinner will be in the Fellowship hall with more than enough seating. Our food staff is very accommodating with things such as food allergies, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. Worship will be in the church sanctuary.
Spend your day away exploring Chicago, the Windy City! Host team will set up in Millennium Park and church groups will have the chance to go explore Navy Pier, Michigan Ave. shopping, museums and more. We’ll have great maps and info on the sites you can explore.
Bring extra spending money for the day away and the TGM scholarship offering
Get Directions
Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each youth missionary group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) (typically small group leaders) to transport an equal number of youth participants during the duration of the mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small youth missionary groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call the ThereforeGo Ministries office to discuss options and additional charges.
O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received email confirmation from ThereforeGo Ministries that you have been placed at this site.
