SERVE Projects
In recent years, Fredericton has experienced a surge in its population, including many newcomers who entered Canada as refugees. Prolonged high inflation and an increase in the housing market have made life particularly difficult for the city’s vulnerable population, both new immigrants and longtime residents. Homelessness is on the rise and there is an increased demand for social assistance. Projects for the week of SERVE include gardening, partnering with a local food bank, serving with youth and adults with developmental disabilities, helping to sort items for a not-for-profit Christian thrift store, hosting a barbecue and fun day in a low-income neighbourhood, and partnering with other local ministries in our community.
Site Description
The city of Fredericton is New Brunswick’s capital city. We are located in the heart of New Brunswick, along a picturesque bend in the Wolastoq (Saint John River). Fredericton is a city with an urban vibe and Maritime charm. It is home to several post-secondary institutions, including the University of New Brunswick, Canada’s oldest English speaking university.
We are situated in the traditional homeland of the Wolastoqey Nation. The Wolastoq (St. John River) which runs through the city means “Beautiful and Bountiful River” from which the Wolastoqiyik People take their name.
Fredericton CRC is located on the north side of the city in the Nashwaaksis neighbourhood. The congregation is made up of individuals and families from all walks of life including teachers, engineers, health care professionals, carpenters, nurses, truck drivers, accountants, business people, and farmers. Though we are a diverse fellowship, we value and strive for unity together as God’s people.
Sleeping space will be in classrooms at the church building. There is air conditioning in the sanctuary, which will serve as space for worship and personal devotions. There is also air conditioning in the fellowship hall, where meals will be served. Summers in Fredericton are warm and at times can be hot and humid. Supplemental air conditioning will be provided for upstairs rooms as needed. Showers will take place offsite at local community centres.
A three-hour private whale watching tour aboard the “Jolly Breeze of St. Andrews” a 72-foot-long tall ship that has sailed around the world and traveled 20,000 nautical miles since her maiden voyage. The experience will include a serving of “Joanne’s Famous Pirate Pea Soup” as you cruise the waters of the Bay of Fundy in search of whale sightings and other marine life, including Great White Sharks, which migrate to the bay each spring. The Jolly Breeze boasts a 100% success rate in viewing whales in the months of July and August.
Get Directions
Registration fees do NOT include transportation to and from the sites. Each church group must provide vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) for the entire mission experience regardless of whether you fly or drive to the site. The vehicles you bring will be used to transport small groups to the work site each day, so 12-passenger vans or mini-vans are preferred. Cars do not facilitate the transportation of an entire small group in one vehicle, so please do not bring them. If you wish to bring a bus, please check with the Host Team to see if this is acceptable before you make arrangements. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please have a youth leader call the ThereforeGo Ministries office to discuss options and additional charges.
Fredericton International Airport (YFC). Please DO NOT book airfare until you have received email confirmation from ThereforeGo Ministries that you have been placed at this site.
